Girl Talk - Girl Talk w/ support Grand Buffet
Hearts of Darkness, Valarium,
Pittsburgh's Gregg Gills has built up a party-obsessed cult following over the past five years as the mash-up DJ Girl Talk. He masterfully re-pieces various songs from a wide array of genres back together into glitchy avant-garde renditions of pop music. His method seems to make a million sounds happen at once, and yet every little snippet falls perfectly in place. Gillis warps the pitch and speed of the original sound source when needed and adds his own beats and squiggles. For his latest album, Night Ripper, Gillis has developed a style strictly for the dance floor. Pounding beats are mixed with an endless flow of familiar Top 40 samples guaranteed to keep your ears guessing and your booty shaking.

Randy Newman - Bijou Theatre, 8:00 PM Wednesday,
In addition to being one of our greatest American singer-songwriters and film composers, Newman long ago established himself among our sharpest and most caustic wits. Critics rightly raved about Newman's 1970 sophomore effort 12 Songs, and increasingly the public started to take notice with albums like 1970's Live and even more so with 1972's classic Sail Away and 1974's brilliant and controversial Good Old Boys. Critics were struck by his musical depth and the literary quality and edge of his character-oriented lyrics. Amusingly and surprisingly to many longtime fans, the cutting social critic and sometime brilliant curmudgeon somehow found himself becoming a beloved children's entertainer thanks to his outstanding music for films like 1995's Toy Story, 1996's James and the Giant Peach, 1997's Cats Don't Dance, 1998's Bug's Life and 1999's Toy Story 2.

Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet - Bijou Theatre, 8:00 PM Thursday, The bare-bones, rustic, and poignant sounds of singer/songwriter and banjo player Abigail Washburn seem so genuine and natural they must come from a person who grew up in love with and surrounded by folk and bluegrass. The way Washburn came to this music is much more complicated, as it involves China, lost banjos, and the rock group Collective Soul.

Ray LaMontagne - Ray LaMontagne w/ support Leona Naess, Bijou Theatre, 8:00 PM, Just as "loud" doesn't quantify the sound of a thundering waterfall, "soft spoken" can't begin to describe the complex demeanor of Ray LaMontagne. The young songwriter encapsulates both intensities in his well-wrought and passionate songs recorded on his 2004 debut, Trouble, and Till the Sun Turns Black in 2006. LaMontagne is set to release his much-anticipated third album, Gossip In The Grain, on September 9th on RCA RecordsTouching upon a range of styles and musical settings- spanning pastoral folk, railroad blues, front porch country, and plangent balladry - Gossip In The Grain proves to be his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date. Some parts Van Morrison, other parts Jeff Buckley, LaMontagne's confessional odes to romantic love avoid the pitfalls of amateur poetry and directly strike the veins that course between love and pain. In arguments of authenticity in music, there is no artist more honest than Ray LaMontagne.

Fall Fiesta 2008 with Eric Church - Fall Fiesta 2008 with Eric Church
Old City Courtyard
Friday, October 17th
North Carolina native Eric Church first appeared on the national music scene in 2005 when Terri Clark charted with "The World Needs a Drink," a song he co-wrote. In 2006 he was signed to Capitol Records and released his debut album Sinners Like Me. To date, the album has produced four singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts: "How 'Bout You," "Two Pink Lines," "Guys Like Me" and the title track. Church's songs are as straightforward as he is. His music looks its listener in the eye and speaks plainly about the human condition. It is a line that passes through Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings to John Prine and Steve Earle, and is finding a handful of torchbearers in this new century. Church is currently working on his second studio release, Carolina, due out this fall. The first single, “His Kind of Money (My Kind of Love)," is now available on iTunes.

Big Fat Fun At The Valarium w/ Donna the Buffalo - Big Fat Fun At The Valarium w/ Donna the Buffalo
w/ support Big Country’s Empty Bottle
Valarium
Tuesday, October 21st
Rootsy folk-rock sextet Donna the Buffalo formed in 1987 in Ithaca, NY. The group's three vocalists -- Tara Nevins, who also plays fiddle, guitar, and accordion; guitarist Jeb Puryear; and keyboardist Joe Thrift -- add another layer of diversity to the group's eclectic and often socially conscious sound. Guitarist Jim Miller, drummer Tom Gilbert, and bassist Jed Greenberg complete the ensemble. Almost immediately after forming the band, Donna the Buffalo started touring, which they continue to do extensively. Not only is Donna the Buffalo a regular attraction at festivals like Merlefest and Telluride, the group has also shared the stage with like-minded artists such as 10,000 Maniacs, Los Lobos, and Rusted Root. Almost as soon as the band started touring, Donna the Buffalo began releasing albums. Their debut, 1989's The White Tape, was recorded and released by the band themselves. Finding time to record when their busy touring schedule allowed, Donna the Buffalo released a self-titled album in 1993, following it with six more full-length albums including their most recent release, Silverlined. They play several musical styles: zydeco, jamming, folk-rock, country rock, reggae and bluegrass. They play both originals and covers. Donna the Buffalo's music is often sociopolitical in nature, calling for peace and justice. Other songs refer to timeless themes, such as love, birth and death. Free Donna the Buffalo tickets available wherever New Belgium beers are served. Check with your favorite local bar or tavern for details. Tickets are available from Oct. 7th to Oct. 21st.

An Evening With Peter Frampton - Tennessee Theatre, 8:00 PM, Peter Frampton was one of the biggest arena rock stars of the '70s, making his name largely on the double-LP concert set Frampton Comes Alive! Frampton was one of several '70s rock artists (Kiss, Cheap Trick, etc.) to break through to a wide audience with a live album; much like the others, he'd recorded several previous albums and built a following through extensive touring, in the process honing an exciting concert presence. That helped Frampton Comes Alive! become the best-selling live album of all time (up to that point), with eventual sales of over six million units in the U.S. and over 16 million copies worldwide.

The Beach Boys - Tennessee Theatre, 8:00 PM, Beginning their career as the most popular surf band in the nation, the Beach Boys finally emerged by 1966 as America's preeminent pop group, the only act able to the overarching success of the Beatles with both mainstream listeners and the critical community. The American rock and roll band gained popularity for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a California youth culture of surfing, girls, and cars. Brian Wilson's growing creative ambitions later transformed them into a more artistically innovative group that earned critical praise and influenced many later musicians. The group initially comprised singer-musician-composer Brian Wilson, his brothers, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. This core quintet, along with early member David Marks and later bandmate Bruce Johnston, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Guy Clark - Guy Clark, Bijou Theatre, 8:00 PM,
Songwriting legend Guy Clark doesn't merely compose songs; he projects images and characters with the kind of hands-on care and respect of a literary master. Clark works slowly and with strict attention to detail, and has produced an impressive collection of timeless gems, leaving very little waste behind. The emotional level of his work, as well as the admiration and esteem of his peers, consistently transcends sales figures and musical genres. Using everyday language to construct extraordinary songs for more than 35 years, Clark continues to be the type of songwriter whom young artists study and seasoned writers, as well discriminating listeners, revere.

TV on the Radio - TV on the Radio, Bijou Theatre
8:00 PM, Brooklyn-based TV on the Radio mixes post-punk, electronic, and other atmoshperic elements in such a creative way that it only makes sense that its core duo, vocalist Tunde Adebimpe and multi-instrumentalist/producer David Andrew Sitek, are both visual artists as well as musicians. The group has released several EPs including their debut Young Liars (2003), and two acclaimed albums, 2004's Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes and their most recent, Return to Cookie Mountain (2006), which received wider notice and appeared near the top of several end-of-year lists. Celebration’s Katrina Ford and Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino have both made vocal contributions to various TVotR tracks and even art rock legend David Bowie (an early advocate and advisor of the band) has a vocal cameo on Return To Cookie Mountain.

Squirrel Nut Zippers - Bijou Theatre, 8:00 PM, Squirrel Nut Zippers, featuring original and founding members Katherine Whalen, Jimbo Mathis, Chris Phillips, Je Widenhouse and Stuart Cole. Since 2002, the members have kept themselves more than busy. Katherine Whalen has released several solo albums, most recently the critical favorite Dirty Little Secret. Jimbo Mathus has also released several acclaimed solo records, all while working as musical director for legendary blues musician and Grammy winner Buddy Guy. Phillips was enlisted as composer for the Comedy Central TV show Lil’ Bush and spent time touring with the Dickies. Widenhouse has performed throughout the country with his traditional jazz combo the Firecracker Jazz Band. Not to be outdone, Cole has written Dancing to Morocco, a travel guide of dark and dusty bars in Northern Africa, and has been performing extensively with Dexter Romweber. The band performed around 50 shows in 2007, and has just begun a series of summer tours. Look out for a new live record late in 2008, and a new studio record in 2009. The band still rejoices at the difficulty people have pigeonholing their unmistakable sound. A perpetually evolving, hybrid-stew of Southern roots traditions, blues and jazz, the Zippers were aptly tagged "'30s punk" by one critic. They have always flirted with a muse most concerned with ghosts, love gone wrong, fever-dreams and stories unearthed from days past.

Avett Brothers - 2 shows - Avett Brothers, Bijou Theatre
8:00 PM Thursday. North Carolina’s Avett Brothers play acoustic music that has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll, which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett cut their teeth as musicians. While siblings Scott (vocals and banjo) and Seth (vocals and guitar) started making music together as kids, their group’s genesis begins when they were members of a rock band called Nemo, which gigged regularly in Greenville, NC. Looking for another outlet for their musical ideas, the Avetts began getting together with likeminded friends (most notably Nemo guitarist John Twomey) on Tuesdays for acoustic guitar pulls, where they’d share a few drinks and swap songs. As time passed, the weekly get-together became a semi-public event, with the pickers busking for the enjoyment of passers-by. The Avett Brothers recently released The Second Gleam, six new songs offered with the natural lyrical clarity and honest delivery that has become synonymous with their name.

STS9 (Soundtribe Sector 9) - Tennessee Theatre, 8:00 PM Saturday, STS9 thrives on friction. This may be surprising coming from five musicians who think of themselves as a collective as much as a band. But consider the title of the California-based outfit’s long-awaited fourth album: Peaceblaster. The two words rub against each other to create an image that is simultaneously utopian and violent, fraught with the very contradiction that permeates America circa now. These road warriors have drawn a map of success for independent instrumental artists everywhere. With support from devoted fans worldwide, STS9 never fail to forge new territory; their sonic landscapes continually redraw the boundaries between those venerable institutions of jazz, funk and soul and the new horizons of technology. STS9 aims to capitalize on the current climate by pushing toward innovation—musically and socially. Their live shows are fun, surely. But the band works to create an environment where folks can stop and think about how all of our lives might be made better.

Dropkick Murphys - Dropkick Murphys
Valarium
8:00 PM Sunday, November 9th
Doors open at 7:00 PM
The hardcore punk outfit Dropkick Murphys formed in south Boston in 1995. After a series of EPs including Fire and Brimstone, Tattoos and Scally Caps, and Boys on the Docks, the Dropkick Murphys signed to Hellcat Records to issue their 1998 full-length Do or Die, produced by Rancid's Lars Frederiksen. Their Irish pride shone through in 2002 when Live on St. Patrick's Day from Boston, MA was released in the summer. Recorded at the biggest Irish-American celebration of the year in a town known for its widespread Irish heritage, the set was a blistering example of their intense and lively gigs. The Murphys reworked the Boston Red Sox anthem "Tessie" on their mid-2004 EP Tessie, which subsequently became the theme song to the Sox's World Series run that year. After the release of four more major albums, the Murphys issued their sixth album and major label debut in 2007, The Meanest of Times. The bands' main goal is to play music that creates an all for one, one for all environment where everyone is encouraged to participate, sing along, and hopefully have a good time. In the true spirit of punk rock they view themselves and the audience as one in the same; in other words their stage and their microphone are yours.

Badfish (A Tribute to Sublime) - Badfish (A Tribute to Sublime)
with special guests Scotty Don’t, Valarium, 9:00 PM. The world's only touring Sublime Tribute band, Badfish will bring you back to the Brad Nowell days. Remember, Sublime was originally formed in Long Beach, CA, in 1988 as a garage punk band. Sublime grew to fame in the mid-'90s on the back of the Cali punk explosion engendered by Green Day and the Offspring, though Sublime mixed up their punk rage with reggae and ska influences. The band released just two albums during its first seven years, finally finding a hit with its self-titled third one. It was Sublime's last, however, as lead singer Brad Nowell died in May 1996, just two months before the album's release.

Pilobolus - Pilobolus, Tennessee Theatre
7:30pm, Pilobolus, the arts organism, germinated in the fertile soil of a Dartmouth College dance class in 1971. What emerged was a collaborative choreographic process and a unique weight-sharing approach to partnering that gave the young company a non-traditional but powerful new set of skills with which to make dances. The group was immediately acclaimed for its startling mix of humor and invention and Pilobolus soon became a self-sufficient organization, its members choreographing, dancing, managing, and publicizing their own programs.

Bruce Bruce - Bruce Bruce
Tennessee Theatre
8:00 PM Saturday, November 15th
Doors open at 7:00 PM
All comedians want to be funny, but few can be described as truly hilarious. Bruce Bruce can claim the elusive ability to make audiences break into laughter not only during his performances, but also for hours afterwards as they recall the things he says. Bruce is irreverent and lovable at the same time, with a girth to match his huge personality and stage presence. Bruce arrived on the comedy scene with a natural talent that eventually garnered the highest ratings ever as host for Black Entertainment Television (BET) on its tenth anniversary Comic View program. Bruce, who is sometimes referred to as the "mayor of comedy," cites Milton Berle, Rodney Dangerfield, Flip Wilson, and Cedric the Entertainer among his personal favorites. Describing his own style as "old-school" comedy, Bruce's honest humor and improvisational style have earned him lots of fans. Bruce's over-the-top ratings for his performance as host of BET's tenth anniversary Comic View show in 2001 scored him a return engagement to host the same show in 2002. His talent appeals to many. Although he can keep his comedy clean, eliminating profanity, and still make his audience laugh, Bruce is equally skilled at delivering adult humor. He just doesn't believe a comedian has to be risqué to be funny. He is so good at comedy he makes it look effortless. With a passion for his craft, he infects his fans with laughter, leaving them wanting more.

Umphrey’s McGee - 2 shows! - Umphrey’s McGee, Bijou Theatre
8:00 PM Tuesday. Umphrey’s McGee became popular for their improvisational take on hard prog-rock like that of Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa. At Bonnaroo, Umphrey's rubbed elbows with groups like Widespread Panic and Trey Anastasio and sold copies of their debut studio album Local Band Does OK. After that, Umphrey's McGee became a staple on the festival circuit, releasing several successful albums and making appearances on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live. Umphrey's McGee is currently touring in support of their 2007 release, Live at the Murat, and expects to release a new studio effort this year.

Everybodyfields & Will Hoge - Bijou Theatre, 8:00 PM Thursday, November 20th, The everybodyfields are a hauntingly beautiful alt-country group from East Tennessee characterized by the dynamic harmonies of co-singer-songwriters Sam Quinn and Jill Andrews, whose sorrow-filled lyrics find audiences swooning in between warm, tear-jerking pedal steel licks from Tom Pryor. Co-headlining the show is Tennessee’s own Will Hoge, whose straightforward American rock includes singable choruses, catchy hooks and the always-anthemic Hammond organ. Hoge’s recently signed a record deal with indie label Rykodisc who released his fourth studio effort, Draw the Curtains. The album is a sultry rock epic with strains of country, soul and the kind of air-guitar-worthy licks Hoge has built his career on.

Iron & Wine - Iron & Wine, Bijou Theatre
8:00 PM Friday. Iron & Wine is the stage and recording name of folk rock singer-songwriter, Samuel Beam. The last that we heard form Iron and Wine was the six songs comprising Woman King released in 2005. What distinguished Woman King from its predecessors was the deepening integration of spiraling, dense opuses with intimate confessionals. On The Shepherd's Dog this integration is complete. Compositionally, it is Iron and Wine's most ambitious and accomplished recording to date. It’s also the most satisfying. While many of us learned of Iron and Wine by way of Sam Beam's tender and spare rendering of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" on the Garden State soundtrack, those who dug deeper discovered a classic American tunesmith with a precocious musical signature.

Larry the Cable Guy - Larry the Cable Guy
Knoxville Civic Coliseum
8:000 PM Friday, November 21st
Doors open at 7:00 PM
The man who added the catch phrases "Git-R-Done" and "Lord, I Apologize" to the American lexicon has proven himself one of the most successful comics of the early 2000s. Dan Whitney, known better as Larry the Cable Guy, claims he was born in the back of an El Camino during a Foghat concert. His drawl may sound Southern, but Larry was raised on a pig farm in Pawnee City, Nebraska. "Redneck" is a term he is not only fine with, but endorses. His one-liner-filled act soon caught word-of-mouth fire in the South and brought him to the attention of television. His debut CD, “Lord, I Apologize,” appeared in 2001 and has since been the “Dark Side of the Moon” of the comedy charts by sticking in the Top 20 for two years running. In 2002, a Comedy Central airing of “Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie” became the network's highest-rated movie in its 12-year history, even with the DVD widely available. “Larry the Cable Guy: Git-R-Done” became his first solo DVD in 2003, and a year later, Larry, Foxworthy, and Engvall would turn their tour into the highly-rated television show Blue Collar TV. “The Right to Bare Arms” appeared in March the next year.

Hinder - 94.3 the X presents Jagermeister Music Tour featuring Hinder
w/ Trapt
Rev Theory, TBA Jager Band
Valarium
7:00 PM Sunday, November 23rd
Doors open at 6:00 PM
Let nothing "hinder" your appreciation of the subtleties purveyed by this Oklahoma City fivesome, who are collectively dedicated to bringing back the good old decadent days when sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll weren't dirty words but a way of life. Hinder's debut Universal Records effort, Extreme Behavior, is filled with flick-your-Bic moments of arena-rock grandeur, all crackling dual lead guitars, ethereal four-part harmonies and soaring beat-your-chest rock vocals, taking a page from timeless groups like Bad Company, Aerosmith, and the Rolling Stones, among others. Indeed, it is lead singer Austin Winkler who infuses Hinder's often-bitter sentiments of regret and forgetting the past on songs like the tongue-in-cheek "Bliss" and "Better Than Me" with flesh-and-blood humanity. "It's more about getting things off our chests," he says. "And it's lyrics you can understand.” Announced on their tour and in several interviews, a new album is in the works, with a song titled "Thing for You." Their new album, Take It to the Limit, will be released in November.

Bowfire - Bowfire, Tennessee Theatre, 8:00pm, Bowfire, the hottest new show to hit the stage, is quickly becoming a major international success. It is at once an exceptionally high quality music experience and a fast paced theatrically staged show. Bowfire has continually proven itself to be a "must see" event everywhere it is presented, with audiences clamoring for more and standing ovations routine. Bowfire presents an "All Star Show" of the finest lineup of fiddle and violin virtuosos ever assembled on one stage. It takes its audiences on a musical journey that moves seamlessly from Jazz, Classical, Bluegrass, Celtic, Rock, Gypsy, World, Texas Swing and Ottawa Valley and Cape Breton styles and mixes in incredible step and tap dancing and a beautiful voice. All of this gets wrapped around a fast-paced show with first class production values that include great sound, choreography, dramatic lighting, set design and costumes. The Bowfire company is composed of virtuoso string players who are at the forefront of their respective styles, combined with equally gifted and respected backup musicians: piano/keyboards, bass, drums/percussion, guitars and cello. Fiddlers in the company are world-class step dancers and tap dancers. This avalanche of talent is brought together under the guidance of Creator and Artistic Director, Lenny Solomon and Broadway acclaimed Stage Director, Stafford Arima. Formed in June 2000, Bowfire made its debut performance the following month at Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany. Audience response was wildly enthusiastic, and the group was subsequently invited to perform on the Governor-General's Awards telecast, the Canadian equivalent of the United States' Kennedy Center Honors.

Old Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Theatre, 8:00 PM, Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) play old-time string music that's fresh, energetic and distinctly American. Still getting to know their instruments, the players first met in New York, rambled across Canada and then settled for a year in North Carolina to hone their sound: a twangy evocation of sideshow carnivals hopped up on corn liquor. With their slappy hambone rhythms and jug-band harmonies, these young upstarts sound like old pros.

Job For A Cowboy - Job For A Cowboy
with Hate Eternal, All Shall Perish, Animosity and Annotations of an Autopsy
Valarium
6:30 PM Sunday, December 7th
Doors open at 6:00 PM
Unleashing a relentless fusion of hardcore and death metal with the precision guitar attack of progressive metal, Job for a Cowboy was formed in Glendale, AZ, in 2002. In 2005, the band recorded a six-song EP, Doom, that attracted the attention of Arizona independent label King of the Monsters, who distributed the disc after an initial self-released pressing by the band. Doom earned a potent buzz in metal circles, enhanced by extensive touring, and Metal Blade Records signed the band in 2006, reissuing Doom with a bonus track. Recorded between road trips with producer Andy Sneap at the controls, the group's first album, Genesis, was released in May 2007 by Metal Blade, with lots more touring to follow.

David Byrne “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno” - David Byrne “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno”
Tennessee Theatre
8:00 PM Sunday, December 7th
Doors open at 7:00 PM
David Byrne is well known as the musician who co-founded the group Talking Heads (1976’88) in New York. On record and in concert, the band was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike; more importantly, however, they have proven to be extremely influential. Talking Heads took popular music in new directions, both in terms of sound and lyrics, and also introduced an innovative visual approach to the genre. In 2002 Talking Heads were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During a band sabbatical in 1981, Byrne teamed with Brian Eno, the producer of much of the Heads' work, for the collaborative effort My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, a complex, evocative album which fused electronic music with Third World percussion and hypnotic vocal effects. Over the last decades, hundreds of artists in genres ranging from DJs to alternative to electronic have all borrowed from My Life in the Bush of Ghosts‘ ideas and claimed its influence.
PLEASE NOTE: There is no opening act for this performance. The show will begin promptly at 8 pm.

Taking Back Sunday - Taking Back Sunday
w/ Envy on the Coast
Valarium
7:30 PM Friday, December 19th
Doors open at 7:00 PM
For Taking Back Sunday, the past few years have been as non-stop as the music on their latest album, Louder Now. The New York-based melodic hardcore quintet’s third album was released on April 25. The hubbub surrounding Taking Back Sunday shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s heard Louder Now. The high-octane drumming and blazing syncopated riffs that rain down on its opening track, “What’s It Feel Like to Be a Ghost,” make it clear that these guys meant business when they went into the studio with producer Eric Valentine (Queens Of The Stone Age, Third Eye Blind) to record the follow-up to their 2004 best-selling album Where You Want To Be. Their intention was to bottle the lightning that this powerful band generates whenever they hit the stage. Taking Back Sunday set out to “create something that we considered timeless,” says the band of Louder Now. “We didn’t want something that people would listen to in 10 years and say, ‘That’s from 2006 when all the records sounded like that.’ We wanted people to listen to it in 10 years and say, ‘Hell, yeah, turn that up!’”
